I like the way that, though Hunter is replicating Vermeer, he has nothing to be ashamed of because he has, to his own credit, also captured the other feelings of the image through its composition: the silence, the calm, and the concentration. To me the window suggests a coming change, that both women are being lurched into a new period of their life, and though it is saddening it is also strangely optimistic.
